The Wheel 03:33
Records on shelves Pictures in frames Old furniture And ticking clock on the wall Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning Thoughts of you fill the room As rag and bone fills the air Like a call to prayer Like craters on the moon Space and more space Nothing handed on a plate Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning on the wheel Turning Thoughts of you fly Till the ink runs dry

NYC Marathon 04:05
All eyes were always on you All eyes were always on you When you entered a room And I would go under Or I would go over The Berlin Wall to be with you If this were 1962 If I don't know what to do When I don't know what to do I clean the kitchen to get through But if I know one thing Yeah if I know one thing New York City marathon Is run and run and run and run Run and run and run and run I would like nothing more I would like nothing more Than to read a book on a train But the knuckle-dragging surfer Is splashing water In my face Like it's California Not the North East In spite of short comings In spite of all these short comings I comb my hair and brush my teeth But if I know one thing Yeah if I know one thing New York City marathon Is run and run and run and run Run and run and run and run Run and run, run and run

Dancing 03:46
When you feel like you're dancing When you feel Like you're dancing Dancing At the wrong wedding Dancing oh oh What is the purpose behind All of this purposeful shuffling? You might say that it's a parenthesis Of infinitesimal brevity Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh A January Sunday alongside you My uncomplaining companion Did you see the raven Flying upside down? Squawking upside down Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh Dancing oh oh

The drums sound like cardboard And the vocals don't cut through In the dark windowless squalor Of the practice room Broken strings, broken gear Gaffer tape here and here and here and here In this filthy womb of ringing ears In this filthy room with ringing ears Another filthy room and ringing ears Play the song a hundred times Till you can play it without thinking Play the song another hundred times Till you can play it when you've been drinking Another band's setlist on the floor Begin to question what you're doing this for What does it mean, this DIY scene? Another band's setlist on the floor Begin to question what you're doing this for

When I took a shine to you It was all that I could do When you took a shine to me It was all that I could see And I'm not an island Merely an ocean No sooner awake Then barely a notion

Silence for you now The setting sun Silence for you now The living's done Doorbell disconnected No answer expected Humbled we become The grieving's done Did you ever leave your shoes For the same old news? Run while you can run It's how the living's done Silence for you now The setting sun Silence for you now The living's done

about

I usually play drums in Bilge Pump, but under the circumstances - a global pandemic and all that - I've been busy at home making an album of my own.

Found within are the travels in my head to other cities and continents, remembrances of friends long gone, Cold War romance, the uncertainty of everything versus the certainty of long distance running, emotional pain as medieval torture, an ode to practice room squalor, the first tingles of attraction, plus a healthy dose of alienation and a bonus James Joyce line for the literary close-listener.

It would not have been possible without overcoming the lingering technophobe within, to which I have to thank Michael Ward for his patient treatment of this new student of home recording.

"A calm, meditative and intricately composed album that reveals Turpin as a skilled multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. The overall mood of the album recalls the wonderful Insignificance by Jim O'Rourke along with hints of Pavement's mood-setting, swan-song Terror Twilight. A real hidden gem!"
